Coaches and Staff

January 2013  - Sam Houston State Men’s Lacrosse is happy to announce the addition of Taylor Brooks to the coaching staff.

Taylor is a graduate of CyFair High School in Cypress, Texas, and a 4-year high school letterman of the CyFair Ironmen.  He was a 2x All-State Midfielder and a member of the 2007 Texas State Champion team as well as 2006 & 2008 State Champ runner-up team.   A LeMoyne College Graduate where Taylor received his Bachelors Degree in Criminology with a Minor in Psychology.   Posted a record of 45-5 (.900) at LeMoyne in four years of playing lacrosse, named 2009 (March) NCAA freshman of the week, and appeared in the 2009 & 2010 National Championship games becoming the first Texan to score in a NCAA Lacrosse National Championship game (lacrosse magazine).  He is at SHSU taking graduate courses and helping out the team.  Hobbies include; art work, sport shooting, running camps through Vantage Lacrosse (www.vantagelacrosse.com).  Future employment plans include HPD or FBI.  Taylor is the son of Debbie Brooks and Ronnie Brooks, and has a brother, Ryan Brooks.

Coach Brooks, joins Coach Perouty and Coach Tabb, where he primarily works with the defense.  As a former player in NCAA Division II lacrosse, he brings a fresh perspective to the team.

Terra Troxell,  returns to the staff this season, where she now serves as team manager and stats coordinator.  She is joined by Heather Rexford and Lyndi Turner in stats.

Terra is a senior from Mont Belvieu, Texas.  She will be graduating in May with a degree in biology  and a minor in chemistry.  When Terra is not helping with the lacrosse team, she enjoys volunteering at the animal shelter, loves working with kids, enjoys running, and wants to live in Hawaii someday!  She also has an awesome dog from the shelter named Lily.  Terra is currently applying to Physical Therapy school and hopes to work with children in the future.

Lyndi is a sophomore from Plugarville, Texas, majoring in criminal justice.  She also coaches a swim team.  Upon graduation, Lyndi hopes to work for the FBI or in forensic anthropology.

Heather is a freshman, also from Mont Belvieu.  She is majoring in nursing and works part-time as a lifeguard.  One day Heather hopes to be a Life Flight nurse.

January 15, 2012 – Sam Houston State’s Men’s Lacrosse is pleased to announce the addition of two coaches to the staff.

Robert Tabb joins the Bearkats as Assistant Coach, bringing many years of experience from the high school level in Cy-Fair where his sons, Nathan and Travis played.  While his sons were team members, the Cy-Fair Ironmen, made four Texas State Championship appearances with one State Champ title and three runner-up titles.

Assistant Coach Travis Cottle re-joins the team this season as the Defensive Coordinator.  Coach Cottle graduated in May 2011 and played with the Bearkats for four years, making two consecutive National Tournament appearances in Denver.  He is living and working in The Woodlands while continuing his studies to pursue a master’s degree in Music Production.

Our volunteer coaches are very committed and dedicated and each have distance commutes at least three to five days per week. Coach Perouty from Friendswood, Coach Tabb from Cypress, and Coach Cottle from The Woodlands.

In addition, Kelsey Brann, senior Criminal Justice major, returns for a fourth season as Team Manager and Stats coordinator.  She is joined by Terra Troxell in the stats area and also serves the team as a trainer.  Terra is majoring in physical therapy.

May, 2011 – The Sam Houston State University Bearkats won the Lone Star Alliance Championship game against St. Edward’s in Keller, Texas.  Coach Jim Perouty was named 2011 Coach of the Year by the LSA.  Congratulations to Coach Perouty and his team on this honor and a successful season.

In addition, the Lone Star Alliance named John Messer - Defensive Player of the Year; Michael Mann – Offensive Player of the Year; Patrick Furdon – Rookie of the Year; and Michael Mann – Most Valuable Player.  Congratulation to these as well as the All-Conference Awardees.

January, 2011 – Sam Houston State University has announced that Jim Perouty has become the team’s new head coach. The Bearkats, members of the MCLA, are the defending Division II champions of the Lone Star Alliance.

A Baltimore, Maryland native, Perouty played for Salisbury University and was a member of the Sea Gulls’ first NCAA playoff team. He previously served as head coach of the American Lacrosse League champion Towson Gunners as well as head coach of the Rice University Fighting Owls.
