The Lone Star Alliance All Conference teams were announced with Sam Houston players again bringing in a large number of the honors in 2012.

1st TEAM ALL CONFERENCE

Attack- Brendan Gawronski

After being 2nd Team All Conference attack last year, Brendan worked hard in the offseason to become one of the teams most valuable players in 2011. He scored 34 goals and had 12 assist and was 3rd on the team in ground balls with 65.

Attack- Michael Mann

Mike Mann didn’t play in 2010 after being 1st Team All Conference in 2009 but didn’t show signs of rust this season leading the team in scoring with 38 goals and 29 assists averaging 6.7 points per game. Michael was named offensive player of the year and league MVP.

Midfield- Zachary Fry

Zach Fry had himself another great year. In 2010 he was 1st Team All Conference and league MVP. He followed up that season with 24 goals and 20 assists and second on the team in ground balls with 66.

Midfield- Patrick Furdon

Patrick joined the team this season and was a huge help on the field. He scored 13 times and had 20 assist and 44 ground balls this season. Patrick was the only player on the team to average at least 1 ppg and have more assist than goals.

Together these four players scored 56% of the total goals scored and 68% of the total assist for the team in 2o11.

Defense- Travis Cottle

The true old guy on the team, Travis had seen it all in his four years at SHSU. In 2010 he was 2nd Team All Conference, this season he was 4th on the team in ground balls even with an injury that set him back against TCU. Cottle was able to hang around the team and provide support and lacrosse knowledge to the younger guys. He made a pretty remarkable return to the team in Denver to give it one more shot in an SHSU uniform. Travis had 2 assist on the year with 61 ground balls.

Defense- Greg Kremen

Greg had another outstanding year playing defense for SHSU. After being named Rookie of the Year and Defensive MVP for the LSA in 2010, Greg was back and destroying players 1 on 1. He finished the season with 56 ground balls and 3 assists.

Defense- John Messer

The MCLA scholar athlete  was a vacuum on the lacrosse field. Messer led the team with 115 ground balls  and scored a goal for the Bearkats this season. A back to back 1st Team defender, John was named 2011 LSA Defensive player of the year.

2nd TEAM ALL CONFERENCE

Attack- Nick Williams

After another great season Nick Williams was awarded 2nd Team for the 2nd year in a row. He scored 24 goals  7 assists and 40 ground balls  in only 8 games because of an injury.

Midfield- Logan Holmes

SHSU was glad to see that the 2010 LSA 2nd Team midfielder decided to come back and play for the Bearkats. Logan had 20 goals 8 assist and 41 ground balls in 2011.

3rd TEAM ALL CONFERENCE

Midfield- Tyler Tyson

After being 1st Team LSM last season Coach Perouty asked Tyler to switch and play short stick. Tyson handled some of the faceoffs during the regular season and had 7 goals 2 assist and 55 ground balls.

Defense- Forrest Schmidt

Another solid year for Forrest as he picked up his second 3rd team All Conference award in two seasons. He finished with 43 ground balls 2 goals and 1 assist.

Goalie- Avery Flores

Avery was a stud in cage this season. After being 1st team All Conference in 2010 with a 52% save rate he was awarded with 3rd team All Conference Goalie with the 3rd highest save percentage in the nation at 73%. Avery joined the team in 2009 when he was asked by a former teammate if he would be Goalie for the lacrosse team. Avery decided he would try it out and has since become one of the best keeps in the league and also a great leader on the team.

The Sam Houston Bearkat Lacrosse team traveled to Nacogdoches for a Saturday tilt with their longtime rival, SFA(Stephen F. Austin) Lumberjacks.

With their first full week of practice under their belts, the Bearkats were poised to continue their dominance of LSA (Lone Star Alliance) D-2. During the prior week of practice, Coach Perouty installed a new rotation to the offense that involved switching attack and midfield lines which proved to be extremely successful as the Bearkats played one of the best halves in the recent history of the program.

The Kats scored early and often as Michael Mann initiated the scoring rounding the left side of the crease burying the ball in the back of the net during the Kats first possession. After a few minutes of the first stanza ticked off the clock, the Bearkat’s EMO (extra man offense) took the field as the Lumberjacks were called for a penalty. With some swift ball movement exhibited by the EMO unit, Michael Mann found Zach Fry who launched a laser beam into the top corner of the cage from 12 yards out.

On the ensuing face-off, Tyler Tyson advanced the ball forward to Zach Fry who sprinted down the field and netted his second goal within seconds of his first tally. The goals continued to come in abundance as SHSU led at the end of the first quarter, 9-1.

Sam Houston continued to gel on offense in the second quarter as Nick Williams, Michael Mann, and Brendan Gawronski displayed their unselfish style of play netting numerous goals as a three-man unit. The Kats went into halftime leading 20-4.

Senior goalie Avery Flores held together the defense during the first half making nine spectacular, contortionist-like saves. After a halftime speech from Coach Perouty and the entry of Cameron Stout between the nets, the Bearkats were ready to start the second half. The routing of the Lumberjacks continued as multiple Bearkats hit pay dirt. Tyler Tyson, Sam Lockett, Patrick Furdon, and Wil Nielsen were among the Bearkat scorers with impressive goals in the second half. Greg Kremen also tallied a point feeding Slinky Sam Lockett near the end of the game. The Bearkats went on to win the game 27-5. Nick Williams, Sam Lockett, Wil Nielsen, Michael Mann, Brendan Gawronski, and Zach Fry all adorned hat tricks (3 goals) for the Bearkat offense.

Coach Perouty continues to successfully prepare his squad for their push towards the playoffs. His coaching methods and philosophies have helped SHSU (3-0) play some of the best lacrosse they have ever played. Perouty and the Kats play the Austin College Roos at home on Saturday, February 26th and then travel to play LSA Division 1 Baylor the following day in Waco, TX.

Bearkats go 2-0 on Opening Weekend!!!
February 14th, 2011

The Sam Houston State Bearkats opened up their season this past weekend facing off against two conference foes, both hailing from Louisiana, the Centenary Gents and the Louisiana Lafayette Ragin Cajuns.

The Bearkats took the field Saturday February 12th in their season opener facing the Gents from Shreveport. Sam Houston’s roster included many familiar faces with a couple of new additions to include the most recent addition being recently hired head coach, Jim Perouty. Coming off of an undefeated Lone Star Alliance season in 2010, the Bearkats picked up where they left off without skipping a beat. Sam Houston jumped out to a quick start and by the end of the first quarter led the Gents 7-0.

The Bearkats widened the margin adding another four goals before halftime. Freshman goalie Cameron Stout made an impressive college debut by holding the Gents to no goals throughout the first thirty minutes of play. During halftime, Coach Perouty made adjustments and the Bearkats came out firing in the third quarter registering six more goals. They would eventually cruise to a 20-3 victory over the 2010 LSA runner-ups. Notable Bearkat performances were turned in by Attackman Brendan Gawronski (3g,4a, 12gb) and Attackman Michael Mann (7g,3a). Senior Defenseman Travis Cottle was also a hawk on opposing attackman as he stripped his hapless opponents of the ball on countless occasions. Freshman Cameron Stout opened some eyes in winning his first collegiate game between the pipes posting an impressive save percentage of .667.

Sunday, February 13th the Bearkats took the field in game two of their two game weekend facing the Ragin Cajuns from the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. Sam Houston stumbled out of the gates before finally finding the back of the net near the middle of the first quarter. One goal was all it took for the Kats to heat up as their snipers zeroed in on their targets and reeled off another six goals before the end of the quarter. In the second stanza, the Ragin Cajuns tightened up their defense and Sam Houston fell victim to the penalty box as they committed three needless penalties. However, the Bearkats still went into the locker room leading 9-0.

During halftime, Coach Perouty calmed his team down and his relaxed approach was just what the Bearkats needed to come out and finish the second half of the game. The transition game picked up for the Kats and sparked a fire in their offense as they added seventeen goals in the final half. Much of the Bearkats second half success was due to their relentless defense. Sophomore All-American Greg Kreman and Junior All-American John Messer both anchored the defense forcing many turnovers. John Messer was a human vacuum cleaner as he swiped up eighteen ground balls. Many Bearkats played exceptionally well but most notable were Nick Williams (8g), Zachary Fry (2g,4a), Sam Lockett (3g,2a), Brendan Gawronski (2g,3a), Michael Mann (3g,2a), and Defenseman Forrest Schmidt netted a goal on his birthday as he traveled the length of the field to score an unassisted goal. Great goalie play was displayed by Avery Flores and Cameron Stout as they collaborated on the shutout.

In having practice just three times leading up to the weekend, the team displayed great teamwork and their unselfish play will pay dividends as they get into the meat of their season.

Sam Houston is now 2-0 under Head Coach Jim Perouty and will continue their season next weekend, February 19th against the SFA Lumberjacks and will return home the following weekend on the 26th to take on Austin College.
