Bearkats step things up in 2011 with 16 games; 7 of which will be OOC (Out of Conference) games.  “You have to play teams from other parts of the country to be taken serious and maintain a national ranking,” said Coach Fritts.  Four of the OOC games will be against teams that should come out with pre-season rankings in the Top 20.  Last year the Bearkats ended up #22.  Coach added “We think we’ve done a good job in balancing the schedule with the OOC games, our in conference Division II games and the added Div I competition.”  Two other games are still pending and won’t be listed until confirmed.

Sam Houston opens up with Centenary College on February 12 in Huntsville.  The KATS beat the GENTS last season for the Lone Star Alliance Div II Championship.  Some heavy travel is coming as Sam Houston will find themselves in Georgia, Tennessee and Michigan during the regular season. They will travel locally (in Texas) for six games and host five opponents in Huntsville.

The Bearkats begin practice on Wednesday, September 1st as they prepare to defend their Lone Star Alliance championship and make another run for the national tournament in May – 2011!  “Exciting” said Coach Fritts.  “This is all incredibly exciting.  Last year was great exposure for us and coming back to Sam Houston this fall, with that national experience behind us, it just has everyone pumped and ready to start working hard and playing some ball!”

According to Coach, “Fall Ball”  is some what informal for the Kats.  It’s all about seeing who is going to come out, how they’re going to jell with the other players, both new and old.  “We’re just about at our magic number of 10 new players joining the program this Fall.  We’ll see how they all get along, who compliments who, what synergies are there and with whom.  With talented players, it’s just a matter of finding the right matches. You can teach the game… you can teach strategy… you can’t teach synergy and Lacrosse IQ.  You either have it or you don’t.”

Here is what the Fall has in store and come support your KAT Lacrosse Team!

Fall Ball Schedule
October 18th, 2009

The Bearkats will be in Georgetown next Sunday (Oct 25) visiting the campus of Southwestern University to play in a Round-robin scrimmage.  They start off with Southwestern at 1pm and then take on last year’s Lone Star Alliance Division I Champion the University of Texas at 2pm.  The day will wrap up at 4pm with Texas State University.  Coach Fritts commented “We have a full day of top level ball coming.  This will be a great way for our guys to play with some of the best talent in the state and to learn what it will take to move up to the next level.”  Sam Houston currently plays in Division II and will be moving up to Division I for the 2011 season.

On Saturday, November 7, the Texas A&M Aggies will be in Huntsville for a scrimmage.  Game time and field assignment has not been finalized yet.

The following week (Nov 14/15), it’s back to College Station for the annual Aggie Fall Classic.  Schedules are still being determined by the Aggie coordinators.
