The Bearkats had a great outing on Saturday against a rival LSA D1 opponent. The Baylor Bears made the trip from Waco to play in the team’s first fall ball game of the season. After shaking off some rust and playing almost all defense in the first quarter, the Kats were down 1-2 and looking for some offense. They found some with the first look at the Mann to Mann connection, brothers Matthew and Michael, and rookies Travis Tabb and Steven Hartshorn. Sam Houston was up 4-3 at half time and starting to settle down. The third quarter was an offensive explosion and defensive shut down. Zach Fry, Wil Nielsen, and Patrick Furdon played well with their new teammates and gave the Bearkats a real look at what is possible for them in 2012, scoring 9 goals in the third quarter and leading Baylor by a score of 13-5. Sam Houston would go on to score four more goals and win the game by a final score of 17-5. The defense only allowed two goals in the 2nd half and had outstanding outing from each of the team’s three goalies: Nick Williams, Mikey Candler, Cameron Stout. John Messer and Tyler Tyson return to a defense that is welcoming in a great class of poles: Evan Freed, Bennett Richardson, Mitch Lundquist, and Dylan Guadalupe. Gavin Garrow had a good day of facing off and Josh Evanski showed the boys from Texas that Cali players know how to hit, as he put some people on their back.
Sam Houston will have 3 practices this week in preparation for what is always a tough weekend, The Southwestern University Fall Lacrosse Tournament. The Bearkats will play Texas State, Southwestern, and Baylor in a one day, round-robin tournament this Saturday, October 29 in Georgetown Texas.
